It's fast-paced and definitely one of the better Indie titles to feature on the PS4. It's inexpensive, a blast to play, and most importantly, only 90MB. A movie game released to coincide with the short film of the same name, Kung Fury is a deliberate homage to games like Streets of Rage , though it lacks much of the nuance and depth that made those games so entertaining.
Retailing for a mere two dollars, this game almost plays like a rhythm game, as players are only able to punch right and left and must take out enemies as they approach on either side.
It's mindless, button-mashy, and more than a bit boring. Yet, with a download size of 80MB, that shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Ever imagine what a game like Super Hexagon would look like as a platformer? Probably not, but Maddening Overload absolutely delivers on its name by replicating that same sort of fast-paced, brain-melting gameplay while adding its own unique twist.
Play on your own or race against up to three other players as you make a mad dash across an obstacle course wrapped entirely around a small circle. The pace is break-neck, the perspective is confusing, and it's the sort of borderline frustrating experience that demands hours of practice, and it's all wrapped up in a super conservative 70MB of storage space.
Do it fast, do it slow, but never lose control. That could be a potential motto for Meshoff Games' Flywrench. Fasten your seatbelts as you make it through courses designed to make you bounce, all centered around completing your orbit around the planets of the solar system. The music, all the while, is thrashing around like a nu-metal instrumental.
Since you'll likely die a lot, you can't coast through this one easily. Time Trial mode will push you to your limits even more. All that being said, the experience is worth 7 bucks and a 70MB download. If you're craving RPG action but don't want to agonize over a massive download, consider checking out Quest of Dungeons. The pixelated graphics and simplistic animations help to keep the file size small while still offering up an adventure that's pretty big.
This Indie romp is turn-based, perfect for classic RPG fans, and features a colorful cast of characters as well as some humorous moments. You'll slay monsters, collect items, defeat bosses, and make your way through difficult dungeons. It's even procedurally generated, so each adventure will feel new and refreshing.
The Lucas Arts classic originally released on the Super Nintendo but was brought to the PS4 thanks to its status as a cult classic. It's difficult, fun, and features a plethora of classic Star Wars characters and locations. Super Star Wars should always be included in the conversation for the best small PS4 games available.
At first glance, it's easy to understand why Inversus shouldn't take more than a few minutes to download. It's incredibly simplistic in its approach, forgoing detailed visuals for geometric designs and monochromatic battlegrounds. But don't let the lack of detail fool you, Inversus has some addictive gameplay hidden under the hood. The premise has you taking control of a colored block, which is capable of shooting in one of four directions. Shooting not only sends a projectile out but changes each tile it contacts to the opposite color of the player.
This allows you to create new openings and paths. The enemy can do the same, which means you'll possibly find yourself trapped if you aren't careful. With arcade action and multiplayer, Inversus offers up a ton of fun in a 40MB package. If you're looking for small size PS4 games, put this one near the top of the list.
Games don't have to be overly complex to be a blast. Still, for those who appreciate smaller titles, 's MB download size should seem attractive. Famous for its glitzy techno soundtrack and tough-as-nails gameplay segments, Electronic Super Joy feels like everything aimed to be.
Popular enough to spawn to sequels—one entirely free to play— ESJ has definitely gone down as an indie jam Pitting the player against 45 excruciatingly difficult levels, this title asks gamers to develop their sense of rhythm as they rush through hazards and hone their platforming skills. It may not necessarily stand out against a sea of similar releases, but, impressive in spite of its minuscule MB download size, it's definitely a title worth checking out.
A 2D pixel art Metroidvania much in the vein of games like Blasphemous , Hollow Knight , and Salt and Sanctuary , Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is a surprisingly deep and gripping experience that packs a whole lot into its incredibly small download size. Tasked with defeating an evil witch and initially armed with nothing but a simple maple leaf—yes, seriously—players explore varied levels and learn to excel at what's often touted as Souls-like combat.
It can be a thrilling experience, and it's definitely a must-play for fans of indie games. What's more, with a MB download size, Momodora makes the most of its minuscule size. Initially released all the way back in , Crimsonland feels like a take on what Doom may have been like had it released as an early s New Grounds flash game.
Remastered for modern consoles, it may seem like a strange offering on the PlayStation Store, but it's more engaging than it first seems. With 60 levels through which to rampage and a neverending roster of alien enemies to slaughter, this barebones twin-stick shooter is a quick and dirty carnage fest that should appeal to casual and hardcore players alike. The visuals may put some players off, but, at 90MBs, it was never going to be a graphical powerhouse.
A lesser-known title on the list, Capsule Force combines hectic multiplayer action with team-based objectives. Alongside your buddy, you must work your way from one side of the map to the next. The caveat is that you can get evaporated in one hit, only to respawn and try again. There's not a whole lot of maps and characters to choose from, but the premise and potential for shenanigans could improve at least one or two pizza nights. It's fast-paced and definitely one of the better Indie titles to feature on the PS4.

Youngling battle royale fans with a case of Fortnite fatigue need not look any further than Hi-Rez's latest free-to-play title Realm Royale. The multiplayer game hit PC in the Summer of last year, and quickly racked up an impressive audience, before moving to console with its open beta.
But what makes this battle royale stand out from the rest? Chickens, for one thing. Whenever you're downed, your character has a chance to survive as a white flag waving fowl before coming back into the fold after a ten second timer. Not only that, but Realm Royale features class-based gameplay, personal mounts, a unique arsenal of armour and weapons, and an eye-pleasing art style that makes that familiar base jump at the start of each map all the more exciting.
The open beta will eventually form into a full release, and you can help Hi-Rez iron out the technical bumps in the meantime by putting Realm Royale through its paces. A hectic, borderline-sadistic hack-and-slash, you should only play Let it Die if you have a penchant for getting your ass handed to you. The most memorable by far is the skateboarding Uncle Death. Who wears spiral sunglasses and biker boots. So we promise all those deaths mean something. Imagine having the whole pantheon of DC comics at your fingertips, where superheroes saunter through city streets without fear of prejudice and adventure lies around every corner.
That's DC Universe Online in a nutshell; a battle-tested MMO in which players create their own superhero and battle it out in a sprawling multiplayer landscape inspired by the comic books that brought us Bats, Supes, and all the rest.
The game's over seven years old, so its visual oomph isn't as impressive at it once was, but developer Daybreak Game Company has been so committed to enriching the game with new updates and content since launch that it's hard not to be impressed by the sheer breadth of gameplay available for free. A must play for DC fans, and definitely something to try out for those on a budget, DC Universe Online is a super sized corker of a free product.
To mitigate the notable lack of crowd-pleasers, Sony pulled out all the stops for the remaining 10 months of By the end of the year, the Vita gained support for the well-regarded PlayStation Plus subscription service. A system bundle, which included a whole year of the service along with a 4GB memory card, came out at a time when its heaviest hitters could be downloaded for free using the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection incentive.
But by then smart phone games were evolving, Vita's reputation had been - fairly or unfairly - tarnished as something with no viable games to play, and Sony was slow to unlock its heritage of PlayStation games to help stem the bleeding.
PS5 take note - while new games are pricey to produce, Sony already has a raft of older titles to lean on when that lull inevitably comes along in between PS5's launch and its second wave. In a last-ditch effort to save the Vita from becoming the next Dreamcast, Sony was giving away a year's worth of access to Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout , Gravity Rush, and Unit 13 as part of this bundle.
Critically, the latter was a disaster for the Vita's reputation. If the masses were already dissuaded from buying a Vita due to a lack of triple-A blockbusters, Black Ops Declassified would cement that decision. For those who want a good hero shooter to tuck into, but can't afford the ever pricey Overwatch , Paladins is the perfect substitute. Sure, it's almost criminal just how similar it is to Blizzard's multiplayer masterpiece, right down to each character's design and their respective special abilities, but Hi-Rez Studios has managed to cobble something seriously fun out of this unashamed imitation.
As a free-to-play shooter, Paladin's microtransaction store, which the progression system awkwardly pushes you towards, is hard to ignore or enjoy, but there's no pay-to-win rubbish to worry about here. It's all cosmetic, and Paladins actually has a distinguishable aesthetic to it once you're done comparing it to other shooters on the market, with a wild, energetic visual palette that's easy on the eyes and pairs well with the rambunctious PvP skirmishes.
An easy choice for the shooter fan. Download Paladins now on PSN.
